Minnesota Releases 2007-08 Women's Basketball Schedule
8/22/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The 2007-08 Minnesota women’s basketball schedule was released today and features 15 home regular-season games to be played in Williams Arena, as well as Golden Gophers’ appearances in the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Tournament and the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Head coach Pam Borton and her coaching staff have compiled a 30-game schedule that includes contests versus 21 opponents that competed in postseason tournaments a year ago.
Television dates and tip times will be released at a later date. On a conference-wide basis, the Big Ten Network will televise 55 regular-season and nine postseason games compared to 13 regular-season and nine tournament games on Comcast SportsNet Chicago last year, an almost 200 percent increase in the number of such games.
“We have put together a very challenging schedule that I know our Gopher fans will be excited about,” said Borton, who enters her sixth season at Minnesota. “Almost every team on our non-conference schedule played in a postseason tournament last season, which should prepare us well for the rigors of the Big Ten Conference.”
The Golden Gophers will open their regular-season slate at home with a Nov. 9 contest versus UC-Riverside, an NCAA Tournament participant last season. Minnesota will travel to Northern Iowa on Nov. 12 then play host to the Subway Classic on Nov. 16 versus Western Carolina and Nov. 18 against Louisville. The Subway Classic will kick off a busy stretch for the Gophers with six games scheduled in 10 days.
Minnesota will host North Dakota State on Nov. 20, before traveling to Hawaii to compete in the eight-team Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Tournament on Nov. 23-25. The Gophers will play three games in Hawaii, the first versus Kentucky.
The Gophers will travel to Virginia Tech for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Nov. 30, then play at Charlotte (Dec. 2) and host Utah (Dec. 8) and Iowa State (Dec. 21) to close their non-conference schedule.
The 2007-08 season will mark a change in the Big Ten schedule to 18 games from 16 games in past seasons. Teams will play eight home-and-home series, and face two Big Ten teams just once. The two teams that Minnesota will play once are Michigan and Northwestern. The Gophers travel to Michigan State on Dec. 28 to kick off the Conference campaign.
Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis will once again play host to the Big Ten Conference Tournament on March 6-9.
