Freshman offensive lineman Ryan Wynn was recently selected by the University of Minnesota Provost Office to speak at the sixth annual New Student Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Northrop Mall Auditorium.
The convocation is conducted at the start of each new school year and is designed to give new students a feel for the tradition and pride at the university while welcoming them to the community and campus.
This year’s ceremony will include a colorful procession down Northrop Mall, followed by a program in Northrop Auditorium and a celebration at Coffman Union and will run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. University President Robert Bruininks is slated to address the convocation along with several faculty members.
The U of M marching band will also be involved in the celebration and will lead students back down the mall for a dinner at Coffman Union.
Each year, the Office of Admissions provides the Provost with a list of top incoming students. The list is then reviews and potential speaking candidates are interviewed, with Wynn ultimately being selected to represent the class of 2011.
A 2007 graduate of Maple Grove High School, Wynn will write his own speech then present the Class of 2011 to the president.
