COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. The Minnesota football team kicked off the 2007 season with a crisp and spirited two-hour practice in helmets only Monday afternoon at St. John’s Clemens Stadium.
New head coach Tim Brewster and his staff worked the Golden Gophers through a number of special team and individual unit drills during the first half of practice before concentrating on seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 sessions over the final hour.
Brewster said he liked what he saw from the Gophers in their initial practice of the season and overall was very pleased with how things went.
“I really like the intensity and work ethic of this group,” Brewster said. “I thought there was really good carry-over (from the spring) and I thought the quarterbacks were much more relaxed and calmer in the huddle.”
Brewster also took time to laud the defense and cited Steve Davis and Willie VanDeSteeg along with freshman Curtis Thomas as players that caught his eye on that side of the ball.
“I’m really impressed with our defense,” he said. “I think they are really looking good and are still ahead of the offense at this particular time. I’m pleased with the speed and the athleticism of that group. They’ve got to keep it going.”
Minnesota will return to the practice field at Clemens Stadium for their second of six practices at St. John’s on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. All workouts during the Golden Gophers’ 2007 training camp are open.
