The Gophers had a solid showing on the first day of the Gopher Invitational Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center, posting a 14-8 record in singles matches and going 3-2 in doubles action. Minnesota was led by freshman Ale Ferrazzi and sophomore Tijana Koprivica, who combined to win four singles matches and to move two Gophers doubles tandems into quarterfinal action tomorrow.
Koprivica (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro) breezed through straight-set victories over Eastern Michigan's Aleksandra Stankovic (6-2, 6-1) and Northern Iowa's Sampada Kanade (6-3, 6-2) in the morning before combining with teammate Lindsay Risebrough (Edina, MN) to win an afternoon doubles victory in the opening round over NIU's Kanada and Carolina Hannes (8-0).
Meanwhile, Ferrazzi teamed with Karina Chiarelli (Sau Paulo, Brazil) to win their doubles match over Gustavus Adolphus' Erica Dobson and Sierra Krebsbach (8-1) after posting straight-set wins over NIU's Meghana Paritala (6-1, 6-1) and Eastern Michigan's Aditi Krishnan (6-2, 6-2) earlier in the day.
Also remaining undefeated for the Gophers in singles action are Chiarelli and sophomore Jackie Sperling (Homestead, Wisconsin).
