Minnesota Volleyball Sweeps Wisconsin-Green Bay

The Minnesota volleyball team (6-3) won for the fifth time in six matches as it swept Wisconsin-Green Bay (1-7) by scores of 30-19, 30-20, 30-14 in its second match of the Gopher Invitational at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 15.
With the win, Minnesota moved to 2-0 in the Diet Coke Classic, while Wisconsin-Green Bay fell to 0-2. Earlier in the day, Creighton defeated Charlotte in three games by scores of 30-24, 30-24, 30-13 to move to 2-0. Charlotte fell to 0-2 in the tournament.
Minnesota and Creighton will meet for the Gopher Invitational championship tonight at 7:30 p.m. Charlotte and Wisconsin-Green Bay will play tonight at 5 p.m. to start the second session.
The Golden Gophers were led by freshman Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who hit .441 (20-5-34) with 20 kills, six digs and a career-high three service aces. Dieter became the first Minnesota player since Erin Martin to have back-to-back three-game matches with 20 or more kills.
Dieter had 21 kills against Charlotte on Sept. 14 and 20 in the match against Wisconsin-Green Bay. Martin did so in the same day, when she had 26 against Loyola Marymount and 22 in a match against North Carolina on Sept. 18, 2004. Dieter has recorded 20 or more kills four of her five matches at the Sports Pavilion.
Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) hit a career-best .750 (10-1-12) with 10 kills and four blocks. Senior middle blocker Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) hit .467 (9-2-15) with nine kills and four blocks. Freshman middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) also had seven kills, a career-high three service aces and two blocks.
Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) had 44 assists, five digs and three blocks, while Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) finished with 13 digs. Kelly Roysland (Fosston, Minn.) also had seven digs in the game.
Minnesota outhit Wisconsin-Green Bay .385 to .065, and had 55 kills to 28 for the Phoenix. The Golden Gophers also had seven service aces to none for Wisconsin-Green Bay, and outblocked the Phoenix 10.0-to-5.0.
In game one, Minnesota jumped out to an early 7-4 lead and expanded it with a 6-0 run to move ahead 13-4. Wisconsin-Green Bay cut it to 14-6, but Gibbemeyer and Hartmann had back-to-back kills to make it 16-6. After the Phoenix scored to make it 16-7, Minnesota scored the next two points on a kill by Dieter and a solo block by Jones to make it 18-7 to force a Wisconsin-Green Bay timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Golden Gophers scored four straight points to complete a 6-0 run that made it 22-8. Minnesota pushed its lead out to 16 points at 27-11. Wisconsin-Green Bay answered with four of the next five points to cut it to 28-15. Minnesota made it game point at 29-15. The Phoenix fought off four game points, before Dieter delivered a kill to put away the game.
Minnesota outhit Wisconsin-Green Bay .439 to .146, and had 22 kills to 11 for the Phoenix. Roehrig hit 1.000 (6-0-6) in the game with six kills. Dieter also had six kills in the game for the Golden Gophers.

Wisconsin-Green Bay was led by setter Betty Slinger who hit .667 (8-0-12) with eight kills, 17 assists and three digs. Megan Elfering had a team-high 10 digs.
