Gigi Marvin Named the WCHA Preseason Player of the Year

Junior forward Gigi Marvin (Warroad, Minn.) has been voted by the Western Collegiate Hockey Coaches as the WCHA Pre-season Player of the Year, announced today by the conference office. Marvin received five of the eight coaches’ votes after leading the Gophers in scoring her sophomore year with 38 points.

A first-team All-WCHA selection, Marvin ranked second on the team in goals (18) and third in assist scoring (20) and seventh overall in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. A dominant force on the power play, Marvin scored 21 of her 38 points on with the extra attacker, also a team high. Marvin scored a power-play goal in overtime to lift the Gophers to a 3-2 win over Minnesota Duluth to advance the team to the WCHA Championship game and earned all-tournament team honors. In two seasons with the Gophers, Marvin has tallied 34 goals and 50 assists for 84 points in just 76 games played. The 2006 WCHA Rookie of the Year scored 46 points her freshman season.

Along with the Marvin earning preseason honors, Minnesota was picked to finish third overall in the WCHA preseason standings. National champion Wisconsin is tabbed to win its third-straight championship, while national runner-up Minnesota Duluth is picked to finish second.

Minnesota opens its season on Oct. 5-6 when it hosts the Nike Bauer Women's Classic at Ridder Arena. The Maroon and Gold will play Northeastern on Oct. 5, while playing Boston University, Oct. 6 with both games at 7 p.m. North Dakota will also compete in the event, playing BU on Friday and Northeastern on Oct. 6
