The 12th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (11-3, 4-0) swept No. 11 Michigan (13-3, 1-3) by scores of 31-29, 31-29, 30-26 on Sunday, September 30 at the Sports Pavilion. The Golden Gophers are now riding a seven-match winning streak.

Minnesota is also off to a 4-0 start in Big Ten play for the second year in a row. The Golden Gophers have won 19 consecutive games in Big Ten play dating back to third game of last year’s Iowa match on Nov. 18, 2006.

“I thought we did a good job of playing the crucial points well in today’s match,” said Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert. “I think our block played a huge role in the win. Not only did we get 18 blocks, but we altered their shots by getting a lot of tips and keeping the ball alive. I thought we did a good job of being resilient throughout the match, and took control of the match in the third game.”

Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) highlighted the Minnesota performance with 15 kills and a season-high eight blocks in the match. Freshman Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) contributed with 11 kills on the day, including a service ace. Gibbemeyer also hit .450 (11-2-20) for the match.

Junior setter Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) had a career-high six kills, along with 34 assists on the match. Senior Kelly Roysland (Fosston, Minn.) also had nine digs for the match.

Senior Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) had six blocks and a pair of kills before leaving the match with an ankle injury at 4-3 in the second game. Junior Kelly Schmidt (Champaign, Ill.) came in and had five blocks in the final two games.

Minnesota out hit Michigan .174 to .093 in the match and forced 33 Michigan errors. Defensively, the Golden Gophers were overpowering putting up 18.0 blocks to the Wolverines’ four. The 18.0 blocks were a season-high for Minnesota as a team, and it marked the 12th time in 14 matches that the Golden Gophers recorded double-figure blocks.

Starting out down 4-1, the Gophers came to life with a 10-point run, capped off by a service ace from Hartmann to make it 11-4. The Wolverines battled back quickly, scoring 12 out of the next 13 points to take a 16-12 advantage. Rallying off a solo block from Gibbemeyer, the Gophers came back to tie up the first game 21-21.

Both teams exchanged points, with Michigan’s Sarah Draves getting a kill after a long rally, tying the score at 28-28 and forcing a Gopher timeout. Down 29-28 and facing game point, Roehrig delivered a kill to tie the game. Rachelle Hagerty (Defiance, Ohio) and Jones combined on a block to give Minnesota game point at 30-29. Roehrig and Jones followed that by combining on a block to give the Golden Gopher the first game 31-29.

The Gophers out hit the Wolverines .140 to .021 in the game. Minnesota also out blocked Michigan 7.0-to-1.0, paced by Jones who had six blocks in the first game. Gibbemeyer also had five kills in the game.

Minnesota jumped out to a 15-13 lead to start the second game. Michigan battled back to tie it at 19, and pushed their lead out to a 25-21 on a kill by Lindsay Miller. With the score at 26-22, Dieter sandwiched a kill and a service ace around a Gibbemeyer kill to cut the lead to 26-25.

Michigan scored the next two points to go up 28-25. After a Wolverine attack error, Schmidt and Roehrig combined on a block to cut the lead to 28-27. Katie Bruzdzinski followed with a kill to make it game point at 29-27. Roehrig answered with a kill, and combined on a block with Schmidt to tie the game at 29. Schmidt followed with a kill to give the Golden Gophers game point, and Minnesota claimed the game on an attack error by the Wolverines.

The third game started slow for Minnesota, falling to a 10-7 deficit. Gibbemeyer and Roehrig gave the Gophers a boost with a kill each to tie the game 11-11. Minnesota continued to run away with the game, pulling out to a 22-14 lead. However, Michigan fought back with a six point run to bring the Wolverines within two, with the score 22-20.

After the teams traded points, Schmidt provided a block that proved to be the catalyst to a four-point Minnesota run to put Minnesota on top 27-21. Michigan cut the lead to 29-26, but Hartman delivered a kill to give Minnesota the three-game victory.

Michigan was led by Bruzdzinski, who had 16 kills and eight digs. Miller finished with 10 kills for the match. Setter Lexi Zimmerman had 40 assists and 10 digs, while Stesha Selsky had a match-high 27 digs.
