Garry Bjorklund is synonymous with Minnesota running and even has a race named in his honor, the Grandma's Half-Marathon in Duluth. Bjorklund was a five-time All-American: Cross Country (1969-71), Indoor Track (1970) and Outdoor Track (1970-71). Among his many athletic achievements, Bjorklund was the 1971 NCAA champion in the six-mile run; a three-time Big Ten cross country champion; the Big Ten indoor track champion in the Two Mile run in 1971 and the Three Mile run in 1972; and the Big Ten outdoor champion in the Mile in 1970, as well as the Three Mile in 1971. In addition, Bjorklund was also a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team, competing in the 10,000 meters.

Bjorklund's quest for the Olympics is a thing of legend. After breaking the NCAA six-mile record he seemed headed to the 1972 Games in Munich. But, foot surgery dashed those plans and doctors told him that he may never run again. But Bjorklund continued to train and at the 1976 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., he made history. About halfway through the 10,000 Meter final, a competitor stepped on Bjorklund's shoe completely knocking it off his foot. Fans encouraged him on yelling "B.J.! B.J.!" Bjorklund came from behind in the last 200 meters to pass Boston Marathon Champion Bill Rodgers and gained an Olympic berth with Craig Virgin and Frank Shorter. The event was even featured on the cover of the July 5, 1976, Sports Illustrated.

Bjorklund is a graduate of Proctor High School and is a member of the Proctor High School Hall of Fame.
