Herb Joesting |
Herb Joesting was a two-time All-American fullback for the University of Minnesota in both 1926 and 1927. Joesting was a triple threat at halfback for the Golden Gophers who could run, pass or catch. Gopher coach Clarence "Doc" Spears built his offense around the powerful runner and it paid off in spades as he gained 1,850 yards in 24 games for a career average of 4.2 yards per carry. Joesting led the Gophers to an undefeated 6-0-2 season in 1927, tops in the conference.
The "Owatonna Thunderbolt," as he was affectionately known, later served as the player/coach of the 1929 Minneapolis Redjackets, one of Minnesota's first NFL teams. He later played professionally with the NFL's Philadelphia Yellow Jackets and Chicago Bears. Among his many honors and accolades, Joesting was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.
