Opening statement:
“I’d like to begin by saying that every baby is a beautiful baby and this one is no different. I’m thrilled to death that we got a victory this afternoon. We clawed and we scratched and we did what we had to do to get the win. There are a lot of things that we need to improve, but if these kids keep improving, keep fighting ... we can be a good football team.
“If you look at the numbers there are a lot of things to feel good about. Rushing the football for over 300 yards, Adam Weber was 26 of 40 for 271 yards and four touchdowns ... we did a lot of good things on offense and we made some plays on defense. Obviously, we missed some opportunities in the fourth quarter to shut the thing down; we have to make those plays.
“Our football team is very excited with the W.’ We are very humble in victory. Miami of Ohio did a great job and they played extremely well.”
On his thoughts after the offense failed to score in the second overtime:
“We were thinking that we had to find a way to win. Last week, we felt that Bowling Green got a lot of breaks. My thinking was that we were due for some tipped balls and things to go our way. We caught a break when they missed the field goal in that second overtime.”
On the offense’s play:
“I was disappointed that we were unable to finish some drives and convert on some scoring opportunities. At the end of the day, we really like some of the numbers our offense put up. We held the ball for more than 32 minutes, we were 9 of 19 on 3rd down. Those are all things we’re very happy with.”
On Adam Weber:
“He’s really evolving into a very good player. We’re excited to see him advance in his role and for him to go on the road next week. He’s become a great student of the game. He’s got great confidence going onto the field, and that transcends to the other players, too.”
On the game next week at Florida Atlantic:
“I’m really excited for this team to go on the road and take on that It’s us against the world’ mentality and to get out of their comfort level and to see what we can do. If we want to be the type of Big Ten team I think we can be, we’ve got to be able to go on the road and win games.”
On the feeling walking off the field following the win:
“It was awful good. The Minnesota Golden Gophers are so special to me. Its an honor for me to be the head football coach because its such a tremendous responsibility to the state of Minnesota and to Minnesotans. This win today is for the state of Minnesota. This is for the Gopher fans; this is for the high school coaches in the state of Minnesota because everyone knows how important that is to me.”
