Gophers Head to North Dakota for WCHA Series

MINNESOTA RETURNS TO WCHA ACTION AGAINST NORTH DAKOTA
The No. 4 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend when it travels to North Dakota, Jan. 18-19. Friday’s game will begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s contest is set for a 4 p.m. start. Both games will be played at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

ON THE DOCKET
Following the North Dakota series, the Gophers return home to face Minnesota State, Jan. 25-26. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. start.

FOLLOWING THE GOPHERS
This weekend, a live video feed will be available for both games against North Dakota. Although there is no audio, fans can watch the game online by going on UND (fightingsioux.com) or the Minnesota (gophersports.com) websites. Liv statistics will also be available.
Minnesota has all home games broadcast live on gophersports.com throughout the course of the 2007-08 season. Fans who wish to listen to the games can do so by signing up for the Gold Zone on the Minnesota website. Curt Carstensen will provide the play-by-play for the Gopher games. Saturday’s game is also available on uscho.com for a free video feed. Brian Schulz will provide the play-by-play.
Minnesota has selected road games broadcast live on the Gopher website, gophersports.com. The St. Cloud State (2/15) road game will be broadcast on the web.

ON THE ROAD
The Gophers hold an impressive all-time record of 112-31-12 on the road. Currently this season, Minnesota is 6-4-1 away from Ridder Arena. Their losses this season have come against St. Cloud State (10/13), Ohio State (10/20), Wisconsin (11/1) and Minnesota Duluth (11/17).

NORTH DAKOTA NOTES
North Dakota enters the series with a 4-16-4 overall record and a 4-12-2 mark in league action. UND is coming off a 1-0 win over Bemidji State on Jan. 12. UND scored on a power-play attempt at 17:47 in the second period, which later proved to be the game-winning goal. Junior forward Melissa Jaques leads the team with 16 points, while by Ashley Paulson with 11 and Randi Motsko with 10. In goal for North Dakota is sophomore netminder Brittany Kirkham. In 24 games played, Kirkham sees on average 34 shots per game and holds a save percentage of 91 percent. Of her 24 appearances, Kirkham has recorded four shutouts.
UND holds a 10.6 conversion percentage on the power-play and a 78.3 mark on the penalty kill.

SINCE THE LAST TIME THEY MET
Following the series against North Dakota on Nov. 24-25, Minnesota has held a 6-0-2 mark against its opponents. In the two series following UND’s visit to Ridder Arena, the Gophers shut out their next four games against Bemidji State and Minnesota State. With a win and a tie against Wayne State and Boston College, this weekend’s series marks the first time since Dec. 1 the Gophers have faced a conference opponent.
North Dakota has gone 2-5 against its opponents since the first Minnesota series. UND split a series with Minnesota State and then were swept by Wisconsin and Ohio State. In their last contest, North Dakota split a series with Bemidji State.
