Gopher men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith greeted fans, signed autographs and even prepared burritos during his hour-long appearance at an on-campus Chipotle restaurant Wednesday afternoon.
Coach Smith was greeted by over a hundred eager (and hungry) fans during the afternoon appearance, which took place from one to two o’clock at the Stadium Village restaurant on Washington Street, just three blocks south of Williams Arena.
All fans that stopped by for lunch during the publicity event were treated to a free Chipotle burrito. Chipotle is a sponsor of Coach Smith’s summer basketball camps.
After answering questions for the assembled television cameras, Coach Smith was given a tutorial of the restaurant’s renowned burrito construction technique by the Chipotle staff, who all wore commemorative “It’s Tubby Time!” t-shirts to make the new Gopher coach feel at home.
Bo Arnold, a University sophomore, was the first person through the line and received a chicken burrito made by Coach Smith himself.
“It makes this one extra special,” said Arnold about having his burrito personally prepared by the college basketball legend. “I’ll bet it’s going to taste extra good.”
Coach Smith’s Chipotle burrito of choice?
“Definitely chicken,” said Tubby.
