Emily Fox Earns Big Ten Player of the Week Award
1/28/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Minnesota’s Emily Fox was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Jan. 28, after the junior guard led the Golden Gophers to a pair of important victories over No. 15/15 Ohio State and Michigan State last week. The honor is Fox’s first weekly Big Ten award of her collegiate career.
Fox averaged 22.5 points and 5.0 assists in the wins that propelled the Gophers into a position of contending for the top in the Big Ten standings. Fox scored 16 points in the victory over the Buckeyes, then tallying 29 points, one off a career high, in the win over Michigan State.
A candidate of Big Ten Player of the Year honors, Fox ranks among the Big Ten leaders in several statistical categories during conference play: scoring (17.7 third), field goal percentage (47.1 10th), assists (4.44 third), free throw percentage (84.6 sixth), steals (2.78 second) assist/turnover ratio (1.60 second) and even blocked shots (1.00 ninth).
Fox is the second Golden Gopher to be recognized with the Big Ten Player of the Week award this season. Senior Leslie Knight claimed the award in the first week of the Big Ten season. This marks the first time that two different Gophers earned the award during the same season since the Minnesota’s dynamic duo of Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville captured honors during the 2003-04 season.
Minnesota (15-6, 6-3 Big Ten) travels to Purdue and Ohio State for games this week.
