The Minnesota soccer coaching staff announced today that junior defender Krystle Kallman has officially joined the Golden Gopher program. Kallman, a three-year starter at center back for the West Virginia Mountaineers from 2004-07, is the older sister of Gopher freshman defender Kylie Kallman. Both Kallman sisters hail from Woodbury, Minn.
Krystle will wear number 15 for Minnesota and will compete for a spot in the Gophers' defensive back line beginning in 2008. She started all 67 of the Mountaineers' games since 2004 and was a key member of last year's Big East Tournament championship squad. During Kallman's time at West Virginia, she was a key member of defensive backfields that allowed just 20, 13 and 19 goals during the past three seasons.
In 2007, Kallman was named to the SoccerBuzz team of the week Sept. 11 and Oct. 29, joining her sister Kylie on the late October squad. Kylie and Krystle became just the second pair of sisters to be named to the team during the same week and the first in over five years. Tina Frimpong (Washington), currently a member of the U.S. National Team, and her sister Crystal Frimpong (Florida) both made the team during the week of Sept. 2, 2003.
Krystle was also named the Big East's Defensive Player of the Week and was a member of Soccer America's Team of the Week Oct. 29. She earned ESPN The Magazine All-District honors for the Mountaineers last fall.
Kallman also scored the game-winning goal to send West Virginia to the NCAA Elite Eight last fall. She was named WVU's Most Valuable Defender in 2006 and scored seven goals (19 points total) during her three years in Morgantown.
At Woodbury High School, Kallman was the 2004 Minnesota Gatorade player of the year, leading the Royals to four conference and section championships as well as two state championships (2003 and 2004). A former NSCAA high school All-American, Kallman was a Pioneer Press first team all-state selection as a junior and senior and was named to the Star Tribune's girls' all-metro team as well.
Kallman has one year of eligibility remaining and will complete her degree in Business Management Education at Minnesota.
