The University of Minnesota women’s soccer team (14-2-0, 4-2-0) suffered its second loss of the season Friday afternoon at Penn State by a 2-0 score. The Nittany Lions, who have not lost a Big Ten home match in more than 13 years, got goals from Danielle Toney and Meghan Gill in the win. Penn State improves to 10-6-0 and 5-1-0 in Big Ten play.
Although the Gophers lost for just the second time this season, strong play in the Minnesota midfield helped the Gophers outshoot the Nittany Lions 18-10 on the afternoon.
Hard work by Minnesota forwards Lindsey Schwartz and Katie Bethke helped the Gophers earn seven corner kicks to PSU’s one.
“We’re got to take our hats off to Penn State. They were better in the final third than we were tonight, they were able to finish their chances, and we did not,” head coach MIkki Denney Wright said. “
Kaitlin Wagner led the Gopher attack with five shots, including two on goal. Schwartz also recorded five shots for Minnesota.
Penn State got on the scoreboard early when sophomore forward Danielle Toney collected a pass deep in the Minnesota zone from teammate Katie Schoepfer. Toney then found the back of the net to put PSU up 1-0 at the 7:25 mark.
Schoepfer added her second helper of the game when she assisted on teammate Meghan Gill’s third goal of the season in the 64th minute.
Minnesota travels to Columbus, Ohio (6-6-2) where they will take on the Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon in a Noon (CT) kickoff.
