2008 Hoopla - Game On!

The Minnesota women’s basketball team celebrated the opening of the 2008-09 season with their annual Hoopla celebration in Williams Arena on Saturday.
Getting to know the Gophers and fan participation were key elements in the 2008 Hoopla with the theme of “Game On.” The Gopher players and staff were introduced during an entertaining version of the popular game show Deal or No Deal. A lucky fan walked away with quite a prize, a trip to the Big Ten Conference Tournament.
Each Gopher player and Coach Pam Borton were featured in a fun question & answer session with questions submitted by the fans attending the event. Then the two winners of the pre-Hoopla sport stacking contest, held in the Williams lobby with other fan-fest activities prior to the team introductions, took to the court to challenge Emily Fox.
The Gophers then split up for a short 10-minute team scrimmage with Fox and the four freshmen (Kiara Buford, Bri Mastey, Nicole Mastey and Jackie Voigt) battling a team of returning veterans in Katie Ohm, Ashley Ellis-Milan, Kay Sylva, Zoe Harper and Brittany McCoy. The vets won by a close score of 14-12, with a Fox three-pointer missing at the buzzer. A jumper by Buford with assist to Fox for the maroon and a Ohm three-pointer for the gold teams drew the biggest applause from the Gopher faithful.
The Gophers finished the event by signing autographs for the fans, providing the team the opportunity to meet their supporters face-to-face.
Minnesota will play two home exhibition games on Nov. 2 versus Concordia-St. Paul and Nov. 9 versus Minnesota-Moorhead, before opening the regular season on Nov. 14 at Stanford. The Gophers’ first regular-season home contest is Nov. 19 versus North Dakota State. The annual Subway Classic is set for Nov. 22 and 23.
