Minnesota Defeats Michigan State in Four Sets

The 12th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (17-3, 7-1) won for the 14th time in 16 matches as it defeated Michigan State (11-7, 3-4) in four sets by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-13, 25-19 on Friday, Oct. 17.
On Sunday, Oct. 19 the Minnesota-Michigan State match will be broadcast on ESPN 2 at 12 p.m. (CT).
Minnesota outhit Michigan State .316 to .175 on the match, and had 64 kills to 54 for the Spartans. The Golden Gophers also outblocked Michigan State 15.0-to-8.5 on the night, and had 74 digs to 68 for the Spartans.
“That was a good win against a team that played very hard tonight,” said Minnesota Head Coach Hebert. “I have nothing but respect for Cathy George, because her teams are always well-coached. I really thought we got great efforts from a lot of different places tonight. Our defense once again was the main reason for our success. I also thought when Kyla (Roehrig) came in during the second set she really helped turn the match around for us, and gave us a lift that we needed.”
Minnesota was led by Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who has 19 kills, 19 digs and five blocks. She missed becoming first Golden Gophers to have a 20-20 match since 2000 by one dig and one kill. Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) hit .500 (17-2-30), had 17 kills and finished with six blocks. Kelly Schmidt (Champaign, Ill.) also hit .444 (9-1-18) with nine kills and five blocks. Schmidt has hit .618 (22-1-34) in her last two matches.
Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had 29 digs, and also had five assists and two service aces. Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, (Ill.) finished with 49 assists, six digs and five kills. Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) was inserted in the late stages of the second set, and had seven kills and three blocks.
Michigan State jumped out to a 9-7 lead in the first set, but the Golden Gophers answered with back-to-back by kills by Gibbemeyer and Dieter to tie it at nine. The Spartans moved ahead 10-9, but Gibbemeyer and Dieter again had consecutive kills by the tandem of Gibbemeyer and Dieter to give the Golden Gophers their first lead of the set at 11-10. Michigan State scored two of the next three points to tie the set at 12.
The Golden Gophers scored the next four points, and took a 16-12 lead on a Luiz kill. Michigan State scored the next two points, but Minnesota answered with three consecutive points and went up 19-14 on a Gibbemeyer kill. The Spartans responded with three of the next four points to cut the Golden Gopher lead to 20-17. Hartmann halted the Michigan State run when dumped the ball over the net for a kill, and combined on a block with Gibbemeyer to make it 22-17.
Minnesota moved it to set point at 24-19 on an attack error by the Spartans. Michigan State fought off four set points, but Dieter delivered a kill that occurred after the ball was contacted and dropped between two Spartans.
The Golden Gophers outhit Michigan State .368 to .231 in the first set, and had 18 kills to 15 for the Spartans. Both teams finished the set with four blocks. Gibbemeyer had eight kills in nine swing and two blocks in the set, while Dieter had seven kills, four digs and two blocks in the set.
Minnesota jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the second set, but the Spartans responded with four straight points to take a 9-8 lead. The Golden Gophers scored five of the next seven points, and took a 13-11 lead on a Gibbemeyer kill. Michigan State scored back-to-back points to tie the set at 13. The teams exchanged the next six points to move to a tie at 16. Minnesota came back with consecutive points, and moved ahead 18-16 on a service ace by Hartmann.
Michigan State tied the score at 18 on a kill by Becca Zlabis. The Golden Gophers move ahead 20-19 on a Luiz kill, but the Spartans answered with four straight points to take a 23-20 lead. Luiz delivered a kill to cut it to 23-21, but King followed with a kill to make it set point at 24-21. Dieter had a kill, and combined with Gibbemeyer for a block after a Spartan attack error to tie the set at 24. King and Nelson responded with back-to-back kills for Michigan State to give the Spartans the 26-24 victory in the second set.
The Spartans outhit Minnesota .235 to .025 in the second set, and had 20 kills to 13 for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota did outblock Michigan State 3.0-to-1.0 in the set. The Golden Gophers were led by Dieter who had five kills in the set.

The Spartans scored three straight points to make it 10-8, but Schmidt followed with a kill and Dieter delivered a service ace to make it 12-8. Michigan State cut the lead to 13-10. With the score at 14-10, Hartmann delivered a solo block on a one-one-one matchup with Megan Schatzle. That helped spark a 10-0 run that allowed the Golden Gophers to go ahead 23-10 after a solo block by Roehrig.
After consecutive points by the Spartans, Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to make it set point at 24-12. Michigan State fought off the first set point, but Hartmann dumped over a kill to give the Golden Gophers the 25-13 third set victory.
Minnesota outhit Michigan State .345 to -.031 in the set, and had 15 kills to five for the Spartans. The Golden Gophers also outblocked Michigan State 5.0-to-2.5 in the set. Roehrig and Gibbemeyer each had three blocks in the set.
Michigan State jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Golden Gophers six of the next seven points and took an 8-4 lead when Luiz and Schmidt combined on a block. Minnesota expanded the lead to six points when Schmidt delivered a kill to make it 11-5. The Spartans cut the lead to four points after a kill by Natalie Ermo made it 14-10.
With the score at 17-13, Dieter and Schmidt had back-to-back kills to push the lead to 19-13. Michigan State cut the lead to 19-15, but Dieter and Roehrig had consecutive kills to make it 21-15. The score moved to 22-16 before Gibbemeyer and Roehrig had back-to-back kills to make it match point at 24-16. Michigan State fought off three match points before Roehrig delivered a kill to give the Golden Gophers a four-set victory.
Michigan State was led by Zlabis who has 10 kills and 14 digs, while King finished with 13 kills and seven blocks. Kyndra Abron had 10 kills and four blocks. Allyson Karaba finished with 25 digs and one service ace.
Minnesota will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. (CT) when it travels to Ohio State. The Golden Gophers will also face No. 22 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. (CT).
