Golden Gophers Crack Top 25

For the first time in more than three years, the University of Minnesota football team is ranked in the Top 25 of the two major college football polls. The Golden Gophers are ranked No. 25 this week in both the Associated Press and the USA Today Coaches’ polls.
It is the first national ranking for Minnesota under second-year head coach Tim Brewster.
“We’re pleased,” Brewster said. “But polls mean nothing now. At the end of the year, let’s see where we’re at.”
The last national ranking for the Gophers came on Oct. 9, 2005. Minnesota was ranked No. 22 in that poll, but dropped from the rankings the next week following a loss to Wisconsin.
In addition to the AP and USA Today polls, Minnesota is ranked No. 24 in the first BCS rankings of the season. The Gophers are No. 25 in the Harris Interactive poll, which is part of the BCS formula. The BCS formula also uses the USA Today poll and six different computer rankings. Those computer rankings have Minnesota tied for a No. 21 ranking.
The 25th-ranked Minnesota football team will play at Purdue this Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. The game will be televised on ESPN Classic.
