Minnesota place-kicker Joel Monroe (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) has been named the Big Ten Conference co-Special Team’s Player of the Week for games of Oct. 4, league officials announce Monday.

Monroe, who connected on a career-high three field goals and finished with 10 points in the Golden Gophers’ 16-7 victory over Indiana, was also named one of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award’s three “Stars of the Week”.

After missing his first field goal attempt due to a bad snap and hold, the senior connected on three straight kicks to provide all of the game’s second-half scoring.

With the score knotted at 7-7, Monroe hit field goals of 29 and 42 yards in the third quarter, the latter marking a season long. He sealed the victory with a 38-yard boot with less than a minute left in the game.

It is the first Big Ten Player of the Week award for Monroe and the second for the Gophers this season. Quarterback Adam Weber was named the league’s co-Offensive Player of the Week following Minnesota’s win over Bowling Green on Sept. 6.

Monroe, who has connected on 7 of 9 field goals and 21 of 22 PATs this season for a team-leading 42 points, is the first Gopher to win the Big Ten’s weekly special team’s award since Jason Giannini picked up the honor on Oct. 10, 2005.
