10/6/2008 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

Junior libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 6. It marked the third week in a row, fourth overall this season and the sixth time in her career that Tan has collected the honors.

Tan also collected Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 1, 22 and 29, and last year on Oct. 1 and Nov. 19. The six weekly honors give Tan more Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors (honor started in 2005) then any other played in Big Ten history.

Her fourth defensive player of the week honor of the year also tied her with former Penn State libero Kaleena Walters for the most in a single season. Walters collected four defensive player of the week honors in 2005.

Tan also becomes the first player in the history of the conference to collect a weekly honor (Defensive, Offensive or Player of the Week) in three consecutive weeks. Her six weekly in her career ties her with Paula Gentil (four player of the week & two defensive player of the week honors), Sherisa Livingston (Wisconsin, 1998-01) and Vanessa Wouters (Ohio State, 1994-97) for sixth in conference history among players to collect weekly honors. Nicole Branagh (1997-2000) has the most career conference weekly honors for Minnesota with seven.

This past week, Tan averaged 5.75 dps and received all 33 serves perfectly. She has not had a reception error in at least her last 100 attempts, spanning the last five matches. Tan had her second-highest dig total in school history with 36 against No. 19 Illinois on Oct. 3 in a five-set victory. She also collected a match-high 10 digs against No. 18 Purdue on Oct. 4 in a three-set victory.

Tan enters the week leading the conference in digs at 5.50 dps. She also currently sits at ninth on Minnesota’s career dig list with 1,141 digs.
