Junior libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 10. It marked the fifth time this season and the seventh time in her career that Tan has collected the honors.

Tan’s five Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors this year are a new conference record. She has also tied former Ohio State standout Stacey Gordon (in 2004) for the most weekly honors in a season by a player in Big Ten history.

This year, Tan has also collected Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 1, 22, 29 and Oct. 6. Last year she claimed the honors on Oct. 1 and Nov. 19. The seven Defensive Player of the Week honors are the most of any player in conference history.

Tan also tied Nicole Branagh (1997-2000) for the most Big Ten weekly honors by any player in school history. Branagh and Tan are tied for fourth on the Big Ten career list for most weekly honors behind Gordon (16 from 2001-04), Jenna Wrobel from Michigan State (eight from 1995-98) and Mary Eggers from Illinois (eight from 1985-88).

This past week, Tan averaged 5.88 dps and received 50 of 52 serves perfectly. In a three-set victory over No. 18 Purdue, Tan had 21 digs and a service ace. The next night, Tan collected 26 digs, two assists and a service ace in a win over No. 16 Illinois.

Tan enters the week third on the Golden Gophers career digs list at 1,299. She also leads the Big Ten in digs at 5.11 dps.
