Looking to Even the Record
Friday’s game at No. 2/2 Stanford was by far the toughest season opener of Pam Borton’s Minnesota coaching career. The Golden Gophers gave the Cardinal a run for their money, but came up short (68-55), losing the first season opener under Pam Borton.

A Rookie Starting Game One is Special
A quick look at the Gophers’ recent history shows that having a rookie start the season-opener is something special. In fact, since we turned the calendar past the year 2000, this has occurred seven times and includes some of Minnesota’s best. Of the list below, Janel McCarville and Brittany McCoy (current) started every game of their Gopher career.
2000-01 LIndsay Whalen (G)
Tanisha Gilbert (G)
Kadidja Andersson (F)
2001-02 Janel McCarville (C)
2006-07 Brittany McCoy (G)
Zoe Harper (C)
2008-09 Jackie Voigt (F)
Ohm Picks Up Where She Left Off
Katie Ohm proved she was one of the finest three-point shooters in the BIg Ten last season. The junior sharpshooter started the 2008-09 season with a three trifecta performance against Stanford. Her 15 points, including a 3-for-7 outing behind the arc, led all scorers. Ohm hit three or more triples nine times last season.
Harper Likes the Challenge
Gopher junior Zoe Harper has played some of her best games when facing a big, talented opposing post player; Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender and Jessica Davenport and Michigan State Alyssa DeHaan to name a few from the Big Ten. Against Stanford’s Jayne Appel, the Pac-10 best post, Harper turned in another of her best games. She hit 6-of-9 shots from the field for 12 points and was successful on defense neutralizing the power of Appel.
Looking at the Bright Side
The Gophers will struggle when their leading scorers from a year ago, Emily Fox and Ashley Ellis-Milan, combine for an ice-cold 3-for-19 shooting performance in a game. The bright side was easily how the Gophers continued to battle and give themselves a chance to win against one of the best teams in the nation. Minnesota’s defense, especially in the second half against Stanford, deserves credit. So does the fact that the Gophers took care of the basketball, turning the ball over a respectable 13 times in the game and only four times in the second half.
Borton Embarks on Seventh Year at Minnesota
Head coach Pam Borton begins her seventh season at Minnesota. Borton, along with Ohio State’s Jim Foster, share the second-longest coaching tenure in the Big Ten Conference. Only Iowa’s Lisa Bluder, entering her ninth season, has been in the league longer. This season, only Northwestern has a new coach after our Big Ten schools (Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State) had rookie coaches a year ago.
The Trio of Team Captains For 2008-09
The Golden Gopher team captains for the 2008-09 season are senior Emily Fox and juniors Ashley Ellis-Milan and Brittany McCoy. Fox is a two-year captain.
By the Numbers...
The Gophers welcome back 70 percent of the scoring, 69 percent of the rebounding and 77 percent of the assists from last season. Topping the list in each category is Emily Fox, returning after averaging 17.2 points and 4.2 assists per game, and Ashley Ellis-Milan back with her 7.1 rebounds an outing.
A Mix of Experience and Youth
The Golden Gophers kick off the 2008-09 season with a mix of experience and youth on their roster. The Gophers return four starters in Emily Fox, Brittany McCoy, Ashley Ellis-Milan and Katie Ohm who combined have 206 games of starting experience. Then you have Minnesota’s heralded rookie class of Kiara Buford, Brianna Mastey, Nicole Mastey and Jackie Voigt providing a solid influx of talented youth into the program.

Scouting Santa Clara
Santa Clara has six letterwinners back from last year’s squad that posted a 20-11 record and finished second in the West Coast Conference. The Broncos, under first-year head coach Jennifer Mountain, will rely on a trio of seniors in Sara Majors, Elizabeth Doran and Claire Goins. Doran is the top returning scorer averaging 9.9 points a game last season. Santa Clara added junior college All-American Lena Gibson to their roster.
The Broncos opened their season with a 62-46 loss at Cal State Fullerton on Friday. Santa Clara managed to get off only 44 shot attempts while turning the ball over 26 times. Gibson was impressive in her Bronco debut tallying a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Becky Goll came off the bench to top the Broncos with11 points.
