Gophers Win Exhibition Opener

The Minnesota women’s basketball team defeated Concordia U., St. Paul by a score of 69-54 in an exhibition game on Sunday at Williams Arena. Senior Emily Fox scored 15 points to lead four Golden Gophers in double figures.
The Gophers took a 6-0 lead and never trailed in the game. Minnesota used six early points by Ashley Ellis-Milan, of her 10 in the game, to build a 16-3 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. The Gophers later took their biggest lead on of the first half and the entire game when Katie Ohm hit her first three-pointer with 1:04 left in the half to give Minnesota a 35-17 advantage.
The second half looked very much like the first game action of the season for the Gophers. Head coach Pam Borton experimented with several player combinations during the final 20 minutes with the goal of getting her four true freshmen some solid playing time. The Gophers had plenty of good looks at the basket but the ball couldn’t find the bottom of the net as Minnesota shot just 29.4 percent in the half. Brittany McCoy provided a spark scoring all 10 of her points, including going 2-for-2 from three-point range, after intermission.
Ohm finished with 14 points and a trio of three pointers. Freshman Jackie Voigt led the Gophers with 10 rebounds, while adding four points.
Minnesota plays host to Minnesota State Moorhead in the Gophers’ second and final exhibition game of the season next Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. in Williams Arena.
