Minnesota Defeats Ohio State on Senior Day

The 12th-ranked Minnesota volleyball program (24-6, 14-4) won its sixth straight match as it defeated Ohio State (12-18, 3-15) in four sets by scores of 25-20, 25-12, 18-25, 25-22 on senior day at the Sports Pavilion on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Minnesota has now won six straight Big Ten matches. It marks the first time since the end of the 2006 season (Nov. 10-30) that the Golden Gophers have won six straight conference matches.

“I thought our seniors did a good job of coming out and setting the tone for us today,” said Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert. “We came out strong in the first sets and took control. However, Ohio State is a well-coached team and they made some adjustments to make things tougher for us. We are happy to come away with a pair of victories to finish out our regular-season home schedule. I thought we did a good job this weekend of playing together, and playing well at the right times of the match.”

Senior outside hitter Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) had 10 kills and four blocks on the afternoon, while Katie Vatterrodt (Bloomington, Ill.) finished with a season-high seven kills, four digs and three blocks.

Senior setter Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) finished with 45 assists, nine digs and tied season highs in kills (6) and service aces (3). Hartmann also moved into fifth place on the all-time assists list today with 4,758 assists. Kelly Schmidt finished with five kills, three blocks and two assists in her final regular-season match at the Sports Pavilion.

Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) tied a career-high in kills with 19, and hit .484 (19-4-31) for the match with four blocks. Gibbemeyer collected 14 of her kills in the final two sets. She has now hit over .400 in 13 different matches this year.

Sophomore Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished with her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had a team-high 14 digs and three assists, while Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) finished with 11 digs and three assists.

Minnesota outhit Ohio State .253 to .165 on the match, and had 59 kills to 48 for the Buckeyes. Both teams finished with four service aces in the match. The Golden Gophers were outblocked 12.0-to-9.0 marking only the fourth time all season that has happened.

Ohio State jumped out to a 6-5 lead in the first set, but Minnesota answered with consecutive points. The Golden Gophers pushed the lead to 10-8 after Roehrig and Schmidt combined on a block. Ohio State answered with three straight points to take an 11-10 lead. Minnesota followed with three of the next four points and took the lead back at 13-12 after a kill by Roehrig.

The Buckeyes tied the set up at 13, but the Golden Gophers got back-to-back kills from Vatterrodt and Gibbemeyer to make it 15-13. Ohio State tied it at 15 with consecutive points, and the teams exchanged the next six points to the set at 18. Minnesota responded with four straight points to move ahead 22-18. The Buckeyes scored consecutive points to make it 22-20, but Roehrig and Vatterrodt delivered back-to-back kills to make it set point. Ohio State committed an attack error to give Minnesota the 25-20 victory in the first set.

Minnesota outhit Ohio State .394 to .235 in the first set, and had 17 kills to 13 for the Buckeyes. Roehrig led the Golden Gophers with five kills in the set, while Vatterrodt had four.

In the second set, Ohio State jumped out to a 5-4 lead. However, Minnesota answered with eight of the next nine points to take a 12-6 lead. Cowles had three kills during the key stretch for the Golden Gophers. The Buckeyes scored consecutive points to make it 12-8, but Minnesota ripped off seven straight points to take a 19-8 lead.

Ohio State cut it to 19-9, but Cowles followed with a kill and Hartmann unleashed back-to-back service aces to make it 22-9. With the score at 22-10, Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) delivered a kill to make it 23-10. Ohio State cut the lead to 23-11, but Filho gave Minnesota set point with a kill. Gibbemeyer delivered a kill two points later to give the Golden Gophers the second set 25-12.

Minnesota outhit Ohio State .423 to -.031, and had 13 kills to eight for the Buckeyes. Cowles paced the Golden Gophers with five kills in the set.

The Golden Gophers jumped out to an 8-7 lead in the third set, but Ohio State scored the next two points to take a 9-8 lead. After Cowles delivered a kill to tie the set at nine, the Buckeyes ripped off a 8-0 run to take a 17-9 lead. Minnesota cut the lead to 18-11 after a Roehrig kill, but Ohio State pushed the lead back out to a 10 points at 21-11. The Golden Gophers score the next three points to take a 21-14 lead, and forced an Ohio State timeout.

Minnesota cut the lead to 21-16 on a kill by Gibbemeyer, but the Buckeyes came back with consecutive points to push the lead to 23-16. Gibbemeyer delivered a kill to make it 23-17, but Ohio State scored to make it set point. The Golden Gophers fought off the first set point on a Gibbemeyer kill, but the Buckeyes put it away to claim the set 25-18.

Ohio State outhit Minnesota .200 to .068 in the third set, despite the fact that each team had 12 kills. Gibbemeyer led the Golden Gophers with five kills in the set.

Minnesota jumped out to a 9-7 lead in the fourth set after a Gibbemeyer kill. The Golden Gophers pushed it out to a two points at 13-11 after Hartmann delivered a kill. Ohio State tied the set at 13, but Hartmann delivered another kill and Minnesota scored the next point to take a 15-13 lead.

The Buckeyes quickly answered with a 5-0 run to move ahead 18-15. Minnesota responded with seven of the next eight points and took a 22-19 lead on a kill by Gibbemeyer. During the run 7-1 run, Gibbemeyer had four kills for the Golden Gophers.

Ohio State cut the lead to 22-20, but Roehrig answered with a kill to make it 23-21. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 23-21, but Gibbemeyer made it match point with a kill. After the Buckeyes fought off the first match point, Hartmann dumped the ball down to the floor to give the Golden Gophers the four-set victory.

The Buckeyes were led by Katie Dull who had 16 kills, eight digs and seven blocks. Kristin Dozier had 11 kills and five blocks in the match, while Chelsea Noble finished with a match-high 17 digs.

Minnesota will be back in action when it travels to Iowa on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. The Golden Gophers will wrap up the regular season at Michigan State on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. Both matches can be heard on gophersports.com.
