Minnesota Defeats Purdue in Three Sets

The 17th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (19-6, 9-4) defeated No. 18 Purdue (19-6, 8-5) in three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-15 at the Sports Pavilion on Friday, Nov. 7. It marked the seventh time in a row the Golden Gophers have defeated Purdue, and the 10th year in a row that they have defeated the Boilermakers at home.
Minnesota ended up defeating Purdue in three sets for the second time this year. It was the first time since 2004 that the Golden Gophers swept both meetings against the Boilermakers.
“I thought we served extremely well tonight and also played great defense,” said Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert. “This week in practice we practiced distributing the ball to all of our different offensive options. I thought Rachel Hartmann did that extremely well tonight. I also thought Pam Luiz did a great job in her first full match on the left side tonight.”
Minnesota was led by Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) who hit .345 (12-2-29) finished with a team-high 12 kills and had eight digs. Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) hit .444 (10-2-18) with 10 kills and a match-high five blocks. It marked the 11th time this year that Gibbemeyer has hit over .400 in a match.
Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) had 42 assists, nine digs, four kills and two blocks, while Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had a match-high 21 digs and a service ace. Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) hit .348 (9-1-23) with nine kills and two assists, and Pam Luiz (Limeira, Brazil) had eight kills and three blocks.
Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) finished with nine digs and a service ace, while Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had eight digs, two kills and an assist.
The Golden Gophers outhit Purdue .280 to .138 on the night, and had 52 kills to 34 on the night. Minnesota also had 64 digs to 51 for the Boilermakers, and outblocked Purdue 7.0-to-6.0 on the night. It was the 22nd time in 25 matches that the Golden Gophers outblocked an opponent.
Minnesota jumped out to a 5-2 lead after a kill by Roehrig in the first set. Purdue answered with six of the next eight points to its first lead at 8-7. The Golden Gophers answered with consecutive points on back-to-back kills by Cowles and Roehrig to take the lead back at 9-8. Purdue responded with the next four points to take a 12-9 lead to force a Minnesota timeout.
The Boilermakers pushed it to 13-9 to complete a 5-0 run, and the two teams moved to 17-13 after exchanging the next eight points. Cowles and Dieter followed with consecutive kills, and after a Purdue attack error Minnesota cut the lead to 17-16 to force a Boilermaker timeout. Out of the timeout, the Golden Gophers made several great defensive plays and tied the set at 17 on a Purdue attack error. Dieter gave Minnesota the lead back at 18-17 with a kill.
Purdue tied the set at 18, but Hartmann delivered a kill when she faked out the Boilermaker defense to make it 19-18. The Boilermakers had back-to-back errors to give the Golden Gophers a 21-18 lead. That capped off an 8-1 run, and forced a Purdue timeout.
The Boilermakers cut it to 22-20, but Luiz finished off a long rally with a kill to put Minnesota up 23-20. Tan made it set point with a service ace. After Purdue fought off the first set point, Dieter delivered a kill from the backrow to give Minnesota a 25-21 first set victory.
Minnesota outhit Purdue .226 to .122 in the set, and had 18 kills to 12 for the Boilermakers in the set. The Golden Gophers also outblocked Purdue 4.0-to-1.0 in the set. Dieter had five kills and four digs, while Tan finished the first set with 10 digs.
The Golden Gophers ran out to a 9-3 lead in the second set. With the score at 7-3, Luiz had back-to-back kills to take the six-point lead to force a Purdue timeout. After the timeout, Minnesota scored four of the next six points to take a 13-5 lead. The Golden Gophers led 14-6, before Purdue scored five of the next six points to cut the Minnesota lead to 15-11.
After the Boilermakers cut the lead to 17-14, the Golden Gophers answered with four of the next five points and moved ahead 21-15 on a Dieter kill. Purdue scored the next point to make it 21-16, but Schmidt answered with a kill and a solo block to put Minnesota ahead 23-16. Purdue cut the lead to 23-18 before Roehrig delivered a kill to make it set point. The Boilermakers fought off three straight set points, but Roehrig finished the set with a kill to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Golden Gophers outhit Purdue .220 to .103 in the second set, and had 17 kills to 11 for the Boilermakers. Luiz led Minnesota with six kills in the set.

The Boilermakers scored consecutive points to make it 22-14, but Hartmann and Schmidt had back-to-back kills to make it match point at 24-14. After Purdue fought off the first set point, Dieter delivered a kill to give Minnesota the match in three sets.
