Jamie Cheever Tackles a Longer Distance This Week

Junior Jamie Cheever, coming an All-America cross country campaign last fall, is enjoying one of the finest indoor season for a Gopher on the track. Cheever is scheduled to run the 3,000 at Iowa State, the event she posted a school record of 9:24.82 at the Jack Johnson Invitational earlier this season. Last week, she smashed a 24-year old school record in the mile, running 4:39.54 at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational.

Keeping Them Guessin’

All-American Heather Dorniden is obviously an important piece in the Golden Gophers’ drive to defending their Big Ten indoor title. Dorniden is a versatile middle distance runner who excels a wide range of distances. This week, Dorniden will compete in the mile. Dorniden clocked a time of 2:05.05 in winning 800-meter run, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and just five hundreds of a second off an automatic mark.

Raising the Bar to New and Greater Heights
The Golden Gopher pole vaulters continue to impress, pushing each other to new and record heights. The school record changed hands for the second time this season. This time is was senior Andrea Smith who re-captured the school record with a vault of 13-6 1/4. Smith had owned the record since her sophomore year before Alicia Rue broke the record 13-5 1/4 earlier this season. Junior Laura Massey, the 2006 Big Ten outdoor champ, has also cleared 13-0 1/4 this season as all three of the top three Minnesota vaulters have posted NCAA provisional marks.

Roehrig To Compete in Three Events
Senior Liz Roehrig is scheduled to compete in three events this weekend: the high jump, the shot put and the 60-meter hurdles. Roehrig, who missed last spring’s outdoor season with a serious ankle injury, is preparing for the opportunity to win her fourth consecutive Big Ten pentathlon title.

Cheever Named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week
Minnesota junior Jamie Cheever was named the Big Ten Conference Track Athlete of the Week after breaking a 24-year old Golden Gopher record in the mile run last weekend at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. Cheever clocked a time of 4 minutes, 39.54 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Cheever also anchored the Gophers’ distance medley relay that posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:09.35, the second-fastest time in school history.

The award is Cheever’s first Conference weekly honor of her collegiate track career. She joins teammate Alicia Rue, who has earned two Big Ten weekly awards this season, as Gophers to be honored.
