University of Minnesota junior forward Gigi Marvin (Warroad, Minn.) has been named a top 10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, announced today by USA Hockey. It is Marvin's first honor and the Golden Gophers' first finalist since the 2004-05 campaign. In its 11th year, the award annually recognizes the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. On March 12, three finalists will be named, while the winner will be announced at the banquet on March 21, in conjunction with the NCAA Frozen Four in Duluth, Minn.

Tabbed the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Pre-Season Player of the Year, Marvin is tied for the conference lead in overall points 45 and ranks second in conference scoring with 38. She tied for the league's best mark in assist scoring with 27 assists and ranks fifth in goal scoring with 18. A driving force on the Gopher power-play, Marvin leads the league in power-play points with 21 and is a member of the nation's third-best power-play unit at 24.4 percent. A three-time WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, Marvin has posted a four-point performance in three games this season. In the second half of the year, Marvin has tallied 24 points to surge to the top of the WCHA point standings. In her career, Marvin has established 52 goals and 77 assists for 129 career points in 110 games played. As a 2007 member of the U.S. National Team, Marvin has also competed for USA Hockey in two Four Nation's Cup teams and is currently on the preliminary roster for the 2008 World Championship Team, which will compete for the gold medal in China. A stellar student as well as athlete, Marvin is a communications major and holds a 3.731 grade point average. She is also actively involved with Minnesota's Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a member of their leadership team.

An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award recognizes the accomplishments of the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey each season. Selection criteria includes outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. Consideration is also given to academic achievement and civic involvement.

The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award is named in honor of the late Patty Kazmaier, who was a four-year varsity letter-winner and All-Ivy League defenseman for Princeton University from 1981-86. An accomplished athlete who helped lead the Tigers to the Ivy League Championship in three consecutive seasons (1981-84), Patty Kazmaier-Sandt died on Feb. 15, 1990, at the age of 28 following a long struggle with a rare blood disease.
