Forrest Tahdooahnippah and Justin Grunewald were honored by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association as members of its 2007 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. A total of 56 male student-athletes representing 38 Division I institutions were named to the honor squad. Minnesota was the only Big Ten Conference school to land two student-athletes on the honored list. Iowa was the only other school to place an athlete on the team.
Tahdooahnippah captured All-America honors last fall in his first and only season running for Minnesota. The St. Paul native finished 58th overall in helping the Golden Gophers place eighth in the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships. He also collected All-Big Ten Second Team and All-NCAA Midwest Region accolades. Tahdooahnippah graduated from Stanford last spring and is competing for the Gophers for one year while attending law school.
Grunewald, a senior from Merrifield, Minn., was an instrumental piece in the Gophers’ success last fall. He intended to redshirt the season to prepare for medical school entrance exams but answered the call when his team needed him due to several key injuries. Grunewald, a biochemistry major, earned All-NCAA Midwest Region honors and was the Gophers’ number-four runner in the NCAA Championships.
The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have completed a minimum 24 semester hours during the 2007 fall term. Additionally, the student-athlete must finish in the top 15 or top 10 percent at their respective NCAA regional meet, or receive All-America honors.
