Minnesota Head Coach Tubby Smith
On the game:
“We got beat in toughness categories. It came down to second shots, screens, going to the basket, all things we didn’t do in the second half.”
“Spencer (Tollackson) got us going early with a couple baskets, but then he has to learn to see a double team coming and pass the ball out.”
“We’re not a half-court offense team. We’ve got guys doing good things for us but we have to get better play than we have. We knew it would be a tough game. I thought at home we would play better than we did, and that was disappointing.”
“We had a lineup in with small players trying to match Wisconsin’s quickness. I thought our speed would match up well. We needed to be a little more patient with our passes and rebounds.”
“We got people to the line tonight and that was key. We’ve been working hard on our free throws. But we fix one problem and another pops up. We’ve worked hard and we have to adjust and adapt to opponents and eliminate distractions. I think our guys are having problems with that.”
On Hoffarber’s performance:
“Blake having a poor night is a two way street. When he’s moving off a screen he’s great, but today we were pathetic on our screens. We’re going to make changes and the time for talking is over. There’s going to be some definite changes. Tonight it looked like guys were afraid to shoot and we looked tentative. We have to be better at sharing the ball and being less tentative to win.”
Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan
On Trevon Hughes:
“He kept his composure and handled the ball well. He is much better now than earlier in the season. We knew he would be tested in conference play and he’s done a good job. He’s not reaching in too much on defense and sitting on the bench as much. He still has turnovers but he will get better with that.”
On Wisconsin’s defense:
“I thought the team played well and they did a good job of playing together. We hit some shots and they didn’t and it helped us out in the long run. We were able to find the open guy but we had some problems with turnovers.”
On Marcus Landry:
“He found his shot with the open chances he got. As a result he was able to finish very well. He made some mistakes but he can always fix those.”
