The 22nd Annual Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day awards ceremony took place today at the State Capitol and featured some of Minnesota’s most-inspiring and influential student-athletes, coaches and athletic leaders being recognized for their accomplishments and the promotion and advancement of girls and women’s sports.

Minnesota’s color analyst of women’s basketball, Lynnette Sjoquist, directed the festivities as the emcee of the prestigious ceremony in the Capitol’s rotunda.

“It’s an extreme honor to even be associated with this event,” said Sjoquist. “We are recognizing some true pioneers of girls and women’s sports. I am in awe of their accomplishments and can only add my thanks for what they have done to pave the way for the girls and women of today and tomorrow.”

The Golden Gopher women’s hockey program will be recognized for their 10th anniversary and success on the ice that has celebrated several national championships.

Another person with ties to the Gophers, Bernice Carlin, will be receiving one of the 12 Breaking Barriers Awards. Carlin is best know to Golden Gopher women’s basketball fans as Kelly Roysland’s grandmother.

Carlin started the Girls Athletic Association in Fosston, Minn., in 1955. Girls sports at Fosston High School evolved from the GAA in 1969 and resulted in the Greyhounds’ tradition of success that has included several state titles in a number of sports.

“I’m so proud of her contribution to girls and women’s sports and for fighting for equal opportunities,” said Royland, who played for both the Golden Gopher women’s basketball and volleyball teams during her Minnesota career. “Grandma had such an influence on me in participating in sports at such an early age. Sports really became a family affair for us. Overall in the world of women’s athletics, we are where we are today because of women like her. I’m very proud.”
