Tim Brewster Signing Day Press Conference Quotes

“I sit here with a tremendous amount of satisfaction, that our staff was able to go out and sell this great academic institution and great football school to 31 young men and make them Minnesota Golden Gophers. Our staff went out with tremendous passion, tremendous energy and tremendous commitment. Recruiting is about results it’s not about hard work. There are a lot of guys who work hard, but there aren’t a lot of guys who go out and get results.”

“We didn’t get everybody we wanted in the state of Minnesota... But you know what? We got the ones that wanted to be here. We got the ones that love the state of Minnesota, that love the University of Minnesota and feel (a sense) of tremendous pride in this state and this school.”

On quarterback MarQueis Gray:

MarQueis is a very special talent and a special kid. He was kind of flying under the radar a little bit, but in the U.S. Army All-Star game, the secret was exposed, the kind of talent MarQueis is. ... He’s a tremendously consistent and I use the word a lot dynamic kid, and it’s no embarrassment to (current NFL quarterback) Vince Young to talk about MarQueis Gray with the same kind of physical attributes.”

On safety Keanon Cooper:

"He made a decision to switch here; he was committed to Texas Tech and made a decision to come here with his three other friends (from Dallas Skyline High School). A very talented four-star athlete, rangy kid, tremendous hitter and competitive guy.”

On linebacker Sam Maresh of Champlin Park HS:

“He’s going to be the flag bearer for this University. Sam Maresh is a guy we identified as the number one most important football player to this recruiting class. Because of where he lives, and because of the position he plays. Sam Maresh is very, very important to us and had the trust, faith and confidence in this staff to stay at home when he could have went anywhere in America. ... It meant something to him to represent you the people of Minnesota (and) this University. I promise you this Sam Maresh is going to be a great football player for the University of Minnesota.

I can see on September the 12th, 2009 at the new TCF Bank Stadium and Sam Maresh is out front.”

On the emphasis on defensive players:

“It was a big priority. We’re commited to playing championship-caliber defense, and to do that we need to go get players that can play our style of defense, our scheme, our way of doing things. We feel we added a number of kids in this class that are going to help us do that.”

On the number of players that came specifically to play for Brewster:

“I want kids to know that I care about them as people. If kids genuinely believe you care about them as people, then they’re going to give you their heart and soul on Saturday afternoon. I go to great lengths of getting to know our football players, and getting to know them on a level where there is no intimidation factor. I don’t deal with intimidation or fear. I don’t think that stuff works. I want to create an environment that is conducive to winning.”
