Minnesota vs. Illinois Game Quotes

2/8/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Minnesota Head Coach Pam Borton

“Turnovers were huge for us since we knew coming in that Illinois was going to limit our possessions by walking the ball up the court. Balance was our key tonight, having four different players in double figures.'

“We're going to go to our go-to players in Emmie Fox and Leslie Knight. If Ashley (Ellis-Milan) can get to the line then we'll make sure to get the ball to her. Every time we're down in the last four minutes, we feel confident we can win because we practice that situation every day.'

On Fox's Struggles

“I think it was just two games. Two games on the road and two games where teams keyed her more than others. Even great players can struggle and we're just trying to get her confidence back and not dwell on it. She's a pull up jump shooter and when she made her first basket, you could tell she was going to play more confidently. When she shoots wells he also ends up playing better on the other en too.'

Junior Guard Emily Fox

“We had a rough week, but we know we're a good basketball team. It was great to come home to a great crowd. We've been working on the last four minutes of games in practice quite a bit. Ashley really stepped up for us at the end. We were looking for her. That's part of doing my job as a guard is knowing who has the hot hand. I think we're moving in the right direction.'

“I know my shot wasn't falling last night, but my coaches have told me to shoot through it and I have confidence in my shot. It felt good when that first jumper went in.'

“We're dangerous inside and out, especially when Katie is hitting from the outside and Ashley is cleaning it up inside.'

Forward Ashley Ellis-Milan

“I've been telling Emmy (Fox) that it'll come, and everyone knew she would come around. Tonight we had balanced scoring. If she has a bad game, whatever, we're all going to have off nights. We have other people that are able to pick up that slack. “

“I didn't really even notice that I scored seven points in a row. Sometimes you get in the zone, really into the possession, because I knew that I had to get back on defense to guard Jenna (Smith).'

“When I get the ball I just try to make something happen with it. There aren't really any plays drawn up for me. Every day I'm trying to move what I do in practice into games.'

On playing Jenna Smith

“I really like going against each other and we know each other very well. She's improved a lot and I'm just so proud of her. She showed her versatility when she hit that long three-pointer.'

Illinois Head Coach Jolette Law

On Ellis-Milan's performance

“She wanted the ball, she worked hard and got good position, she really put Minnesota on her back.'

On Minnesota's aggressive play

“I think we knew Minnesota was one of those teams that takes pride in being aggressive. I've got to give a lot of credit to Minnesota.'

On Emily Fox

“She's a great player and great players rise to the occasion. She did what she needed to do to help their team win and that's a sign of a great player.'
