Hassett, Dalen Pitch Back-to-Back Shutouts in Tennessee

Gopher pitchers Briana Hassett and Katie Dalen each tossed shutouts as the Golden Gophers (14-5) extended their winning streak to eight games at the UT-Martin Hospitality House Classic Saturday. Hassett struck out 12 in the Gophers' 1-0 morning win over the Northern Iowa Panthers, and Dalen followed with seven strikeouts of her own in a 3-0 afternoon victory over Ball State.
Hassett (9-2), on the heels of her record-setting 17 strikeout performance Friday night, fanned a dozen Panther hitters in Minnesota's first win of the day, allowing ony one hit and two baserunners. She has now allowed only one earned run in her previous 39 innings pitched and lowered her season ERA to a miniscule 1.34. She has struck out 113 hitters in only 68 innings pitched this season.
Outfielder Casey Wheeler drove in in the game's only run with a solo homer in the fifth to give the Gophers their second straight victory at the tournament. UNI's Jen Larson limited the Gophers to just six hits all morning, two of them by third baseman Colleen Conway.
At 3 p.m., the Gophers played their third tournament game against Ball State, as co-head coaches Lisa Bernstein and Julie Standering handed the ball to Minnesota's other junior hurler. Dalen was nearly as unhittable as Hassett, striking out seven and allowing ony two hits in the shutout win. Dalen lowered her ERA to 3.38 and picked up her fifth win of the season.
Offensively in game two, the Gophers received a first inning RBI double from freshman first baseman Malisa Barnes to grab the early lead. They tacked on two more in the fourth when senior Amber Nelsen connected on her second homer of the season and pinch runner Bethany Wolvington scored on a wild pitch (after hits by Shannon Stemper and Brianna Sudenga).
Sunday, the Gophers will finish up play at the Hospitality House Classic when they take on the host Skyhawks at 10 a.m. and Indiana State at 12:30 p.m.
