Roehrig, Bingle Receive Big Ten Track Honors

Minnesota senior Liz Roehrig and head coach Matt Bingle were recognized today as the Big Ten Conference announced their indoor track & field honor squads and postseason awards. Roehrig received a pair of accolades as she was named the Big Ten Conference Field Event Athlete of the Year, as well as the Big Ten Field Event of the Championships. Bingle was voted the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Roehrig set a Minnesota and Big Ten record in winning the pentathlon at the recent Big Ten Indoor Championships with 4,218 points, also the second-best tally in the nation this season. The two-time Gopher All-American became the first Minnesota athlete, male or female, to win four consecutive Big Ten individual titles in the same event/sport. Roehrig, a Chilton, Wis., native will compete in the pentathlon at the upcoming NCAA Championships (March 14-15).
Bingle, in his second season as the head coach of the Golden Gophers, added his second consecutive coaching honor after guiding Minnesota to the team title in the 2008 Big Ten Indoor Championships.
The Big Ten also announced its All-Big Ten teams. Gophers named to the All-Big Ten First Team were Liz Podominick, Alicia Rue and Roehrig. Minnesota also landed eight athletes on the All-Big Ten Second Team: Gabriele Anderson, Jamie Cheever, Heather Dorniden, Christin Kingsley, Challis Larson, Caitlin Roemhildt, Julie Schwengler and Nikki Swenson.
