Freshman Drew Brown and junior Cole Young performed well for Minnesota last week at the Speedo USA Diving Spring National Championships at University Aquatic Center. The pair narrowly missed qualification for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June but were able to earn a trip to the USA Diving Selection Camp following the Olympic Trials at the end of June.

The pair kept a busy schedule of competition throughout the meet held April 16-20. The highlight came in the 10-meter platform competition where both reached the finals. Brown ended up in ninth place with a score of 361.70, just one spot from qualifying for Olympic Trials. His top dive was his sixth and final effort where he garnered a score of 66.30 on a back 2 1/2 somersault with a 1 1/2 twist in pike. Young just behind Brown in 10th place with a tally of 353.25. Sophomore Tyler Jepsen also competed for the Gophers, finishing 20th with a score of 169.25.

This was the first major international competition for Young and the second for Brown, who competed at the 2007 World University Games in Thailand.

The tandem teamed to place third in the synchronized platform competition with a score of 313.41 to earn consideration at the USA Diving Selection Camp. They also finished eighth in the synchronized 3-meter springboard event with a tally of 302.70.

Brown also competed in the 1 and 3-meter springboard events individually. He took 20th on the 1-meter with a score of 273.60 and 20th on the 3-meter with 314.80 points.
