Three Gopher Teams Receive APR Honors from the NCAA

Three University of Minnesota athletic programs received special recognition from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Thursday for their outstanding Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.

The Gophers’ women’s cross country, women’s track & field and women’s tennis programs were honored for earning multi-year APR scores that rank among the top 10 percent of all teams in their respective sports.

With this achievement, the Minnesota women’s cross country and track & field teams now rate among the nation’s model programs in terms of excellence in competition and in the classroom. Both teams won a Big Ten championship this academic year, with cross country earning a perfect APR score of 1,000 and women’s track & field posting a near-perfect score of 996.

The Gophers’ nationally ranked women’s tennis program, which defeated Purdue today in the opening round of the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Championship, also had a perfect APR score of 1,000.

The NCAA considers programs that earn APR scores ranging from 965 to 1,000 to be “high performing” teams.

The APR, which includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in its calculation, is intended to provide a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete.

The NCAA will announce APR scores for all of Minnesota’s 25 teams on May 6.
