Minnesota Gains 111 Spring Big Ten All-Academic Accolades

The Big Ten Conference announced that 111 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the spring season. Minnesota sports included in the spring were baseball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s hockey (as at-large sports), rowing, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track and field. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Baseball had 12 players named to the Big Ten All-Academic team, highlighted by First-Team All-Big Ten honoree and First-Team Academic All-American Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.). Second-Team All-Big Ten catcher Jeff DeSmidt (Mahtomedi, Minn.) was also named Big Ten All-Academic.
Softball had nine players named to the Big Ten All-Academic team. Briana Hassett (Eagan, Minn.) highlighted that list as a Second-Team All-Big Ten performer. Third-team honorees Sila Fernandez and Colleen Conway were also named Big Ten All-Academic.
Patrick Datz (Bluffton, S.C.) and Thomas Campbell (Abbotsford Dunedin, New Zealand) each collected Big Ten All-Academic honors for the Men’s Golf team. Campbell finished tied for 31st in the Big Ten Championships.
Women’s golf had five players named All-Academic, including Paige Bromen (Stillwater, Minn.) who finished 35th in the Big Ten Championships.
Minnesota’s rowing team had 14 members of its team named to the Big Ten All-Academic team. That group was highlighted by First-Team All-Big Ten honoree Megan Flannery (Rochester, Minn.).
The Golden Gophers’ men’s tennis team had five players named Big Ten All-Academic, including Raoul Schwark (Dalheim, Germany) who was named All-Big Ten. Minnesota’s women’s tennis team had six players named to Big Ten All-Academic team, highlighted by team MVP Lindsey Risebrough (Edina, Minn.).
Minnesota’s men’s track team had 16 members named to the Big Ten All-Academic team. Highlighting that group was Big Ten 800-meter outdoor champion Hans Storvick (Mankato, Minn.).
The Golden Gophers’ women’s track team had 24 Big Ten All-Academic honorees. Leading the way, were Big Ten outdoor champions Heather Dorniden (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Liz Roehrig (Chilton, Wis.). Dorniden was the Big Ten outdoor champion in the 800 meters, while Roehrig claimed the heptathlon championship. Dorniden was also the runner-up in the 800-meter in the indoor NCAA Championships.
