The Minnesota baseball team has signed Sam Schissel to a national letter of intent during the late signing period according to an announcement made by Minnesota head coach John Anderson on Wednesday, June 4. Schissel joins J.T. Canakees, Justin Gominsky, Troy Larson, Ethan Liederman, Austin Lubinsky, Matt Puhl and Kurt Schlagen as part of a class that is eligible to compete for Minnesota in 2009.
Schissel is a 5-11, 190 pound left-handed pitcher out of Kenosha Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wis. This year, Schissel is 6-0 with a 2.90 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 52.2 innings. He has helped guide Kenosha Bradford to its first state tournament berth in 44 years. Schissel pitched a four-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over Lake Geneva Badger in the Sectional Championship to send his team to the State Tournament.
As a junior, Schissel played at Racine Park where he was named First-Team All-Conference. He went 3-2 with a 1.33 ERA and struck out 48 batters in 27.0 innings. Schissel also batted .393 with 20 RBI. He was named among the Top 40 prospects at the Bull-Sox Training Academy, played in the Milwaukee Brewer’s Showcase Prep Classic and was on Team Wisconsin for Midwest Baseball Tournament.
“Sam is a quality left-handed pitcher who is a tough competitor and has a very good mental make up,” said Anderson. “We knew we wanted to add a left-handed pitcher to this year’s recruiting class, and Sam was a very good fit for the program. He is a player who showed interest in our program throughout the process, and we recognized that he would be a great fit for our team. Sam is a quality left-handed pitcher who is a good match for what we wanted in our program, and a is a great addition to our recruiting class.”

Todd Oakes Minnesota Pitching Coach on Sam Schissel “Sam is a quality left-handed pitcher with command of three pitches (fastball, curve and a changeup). He throws a high percentage of strikes and brings energy and aggressiveness to the mound. I think Sam’s greatest quality is his ability to compete and battle through tough innings. We expect Sam to come in the fall and compete for a significant role on the pitching staff. He had some arm trouble late last summer but has rebounded well and has had a strong spring high school season. We stayed with him and supported him in the recruiting process and he was patient with us as well. Sam showed a strong interest in the University of Minnesota and we feel he will be an asset to our program.”
