University of Minnesota women's hockey assistant coach Laura Slominski has taken the head coaching position at Edina High School and will leave the university after a two-year stint. Slominski, a former Golden Gopher athlete from 1998-2002, will become the head coach of the Hornets and will also teach math for Valley View Middle School in Edina.

“I would like to thank the University of Minnesota for the opportunity to come back and coach at my alma mater,” Slominski said. “It has been an incredible experience. I am sad to be leaving this program, which has such a bright future and such a rich tradition, but I look forward to the journey ahead. I wish the student-athletes, staff, and the university nothing but the best in the years to come. I am excited to watch their continued success.”

Slominski returned to the Gopher program in the 2006-07 season after a year with St. Cloud State. While at Minnesota, Slominski coached the forwards, assisted with the power-play and penalty kill and was the Gophers’ recruiting coordinator. During her tenure, Minnesota had five forwards earn All-WCHA honors, while Slominski was their position coach. On the recruiting trail, the Gophers signed one of its best recruiting classes in school history this past fall, bringing in six athletes with international experience.

As an athlete at Minnesota, Slominski finished her Gopher career in 2002 with 161 points, ranking seventh in school history. A Patty Kazmaier Award finalist, Slominski earned All-WCHA honors in 2000 and was a team captain her senior year. With the Maroon and Gold, Slominski was a member of the 2000 national championship team, a member of two WCHA regular season championship teams (2001 and 2002) and a member of the 2002 WCHA tournament championship team.

“Laura has been a tremendous asset to our coaching staff over the past two years,” head coach Brad Frost said. “She made an impact as a player here and has left a mark on this program as a coach as well. She is returning to her true love of teaching in the classroom as well as on the ice. Edina High School has found a great one in Laura Slominski and the Gopher program wishes her nothing but the best.”
