Ridder and Mariucci Arenas are a buzz this week as Minnesota women’s hockey head coach Brad Frost hosts the Minnesota Girls High School Elite Hockey Camp. Over 90 high school athletes are filling the corridors as Frost is in his last week of summer camps. Along with coach Frost, current Gophers Rachael Drazan, Gigi Marvin, Michelle Maunu, Laura May, Terra Rasmussen and Alexandra Zebro are assisting with the camp. Former Gopher and assistant coach Laura Slominski, former assistant and current Bethel men’s hockey coach Joel Johnson and Wisconsin alum Sis Paulsen are also staff members during the five-day camp.
The camp started on Sunday, July 20 with the first orientation beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday was only a practice day, while Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are both practice and game days. Wednesday and Friday are gamedays only. The camp begins at 8:30 a.m and runs until 6:15 p.m. each day. With 92 registered campers, the athletes are divided into six teams: Maroon, Gold, Blue, Black, White and Green. Each current Gopher is the coach of one team, while Frost, Johnson, Paulsen and Slominski oversee all teams.
The High School Elite Camp is the second week of camps for Frost. On July 7-11, staff members hosted an Under-14 and Under-11 day camp, which ran from 8:30 a..m to 2 p.m. Over 30 kids attended the day camp to put his second-annual camps over the 120-participant mark.
“In the second year of the camp, I think we have had great turnout,” Frost said. “It has been a great experience getting to know these kids and we look forward to the rest of the week. We strive to improve their game as they continue their hockey careers.”
