The Minnesota volleyball team’s 2008 recruiting class was ranked No. 12 in the nation according to prepvolleyball.com. It marks the fourth time in five years that the Golden Gophers have had a class ranked in the top 12 by prepvolleyball.com

This year’s class is made up of Alex Blatt (Orland Park, Minn.), Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.), Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.), Pam Luiz (Limeira, Brazil) and Ashley Suapaia (Bloomington, Minn.). During the process of coming up with the rankings, prepvolleyball.com did not consider Luiz’s impact since she is junior and not an incoming freshman.

Minnesota had the fourth-best recruiting class in the nation in 2003, 2005 and 2007. The 2003 class consisted of 2006 Second-Team All-American Meredith Nelson, 2004 First-Team All-American Kelly Bowman and 2006 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Malama Peniata.

Minnesota Recruiting Class According to prepvolleyball.com:

“The Gophers went shopping for very specific positional needs and got exactly what they wanted. Blatt, a former USA Jr. National Team member, arrives in Minneapolis in August to challenge incumbent setter Rachel Hartmann for the starting position. She is silky smooth and plays with confidence. Filho, also a former USA Jr. National Team member, will add athleticism and depth to a solid corps of middles. The Gophers continued to emphasize their commitment to ball control by adding both Granquist and Suapaia. Both are dependable and experienced. Brazilian Pamela Ruiz, not considered in the rating of this class because she is a foreign player, may make the biggest impact for the Gophers. After earning All-America accolades in the JuCo ranks last year, Ruiz, a 5-11 OH, has skill and savvy.”
