Gophers Compete On Fifth Day Of U.S. Olympic Trials

Four Gophers were in action on the fifth day of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. Gopher 14-time All-American David Plummer reached the semifinals of the 200-meter backstroke to lead Minnesota's contigent. He ended up with a 16th place finish.
Plummer, who placed seventh in the 100-meter back earlier in the Trials, posted a semifinal time of 2:02.24. He clocked a 2:01.09 in the preliminaries to advance to the semis with the 16th-best time.
In the other men's individual event, Alex Wold posted a lifetime-best time of 2:03.74 to place 22nd in the in the 200-meter individual medley. The junior has had an outstanding meet, clocking personal-best times in each of his three events. Graduated senior Russ Payne also placed 28th in 2:04.21 and junior Mark Solfelt was 63rd in a time of 2:07.05.
Tomorrow's schedule of events includes the men's 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter butterfly along with the women's 800-meter free and 200-meter backstroke.
