The 2008 campaign is right around the corner for the University of Minnesota football team. The Gophers will hit the practice field for the first time Monday in preparation for the upcoming season.
Gopher newcomers are scheduled to report to campus, get settled in their residence halls and go through an orientation session Saturday. More freshman orientation is followed by a team meeting, as upperclassmen report on Sunday. Sunday evening will include another orientation session and some team building before Monday’s first day of camp.
Rest will be important for the Gophers Sunday night. Team members will go through a conditioning test bright and early on Monday morning. The afternoon will be spent in meetings, leading up to the first workout of the season later in the day. After dinner, another meeting and more team building will wrap up a busy first day.
Players are only allowed to wear helmets during the first two practices, per NCAA rules. Shoulder pads are allowed for the third and fourth practices. Come Friday, the Gophers will be in full pads and in full-contact mode. Saturday will be the first of six days with two practices each. These two-a-days are scattered throughout preseason camp. In all, the squad will practice 29 times between Monday and the Aug. 30 season-opener with Northern Illinois.
