Gophers End the Week of Preparation For Italy Trip

It’s day five of a week of practices for the Golden Gopher women’s basketball team as they prepare for their trip to Italy.

During the week, Becky Bohm, the associate director of athletic communications, will post reports on the Gophers’ preparation for the first summer international tour in the program’s history.

Hi Gopher fans! It’s 1 p.m. and time to tip off the final practice of the week. Coach Borton gathered the players at center court and announced that the practice will be short, but focused. The media has been invited to stop by after practice as well.

As the team is split once again with the guards working at the west basket and posts on the east hoop, I’ll give you a little report on last night’s cookout at Pam’s house. I was told that kudos go to freshman Brianna Mastey for her mastery of the grill. Sounds like everyone pitched into make a fantastic spread of food, but as you all know, if the grill master fails, well, enough said.

The cookout was a bit of a send off for the four freshmen who do not get to travel to Italy. Nicole Mastey, Kiara Buford, Jackie Voigt and Brianna have finished up summer school and will have a few weeks off before returning to campus for the fall semester. It will be exciting to see this foursome take to the court in the Maroon and Gold in November.

The team has moved into a 4-on-4 drill. Tanisha Smith just grabbed a nice rebound and make good on a putback drawing praise from the coaches. Tanisha is a player who is expected to see extensive action on the Italy trip. What a great opportunity to get a young player some valuable on-court, in-game experience.

After practice, the players will find some new travel gear for the Italy trip waiting for them in their lockers. As each day passes, the upcoming excursion seems more and more real. We received luggage tags and a small travel bag today as well. Lots of talk about how to pack, what to pack, etc.

The players will have the weekend off and will gather for lifting weights and a cardio workout on Monday before heading to the airport for an evening departure.

Time for me to oversee the media interviews. I hope you have enjoyed reading these blogs about your Golden Gophers and will continue to click back to gophersports.com to follow the team in Italy.
