Big Ten Preseason Soccer Poll Released, Gophers Sixth

Big Ten Conference coaches picked the University of Minnesota women’s soccer team to repeat their sixth-place conference finish from 2007, as the conference released their preseason coaches’ soccer poll Monday afternoon.
“The only poll that matters to our team is the one at the end of the year. The only team we’ll be concerned with is our next opponent,” head coach Mikki Denney Wright said. “The Big Ten is loaded this year and every conference game will be a battle.”
For the sixth straight season, Big Ten coaches tabbed Penn State as the preseason favorites to win the Big Ten crown. The Gophers handed Penn State its only regular season conference loss in 2007. Illinois is picked second and 2007 Big Ten Tournament champion Purdue is picked third. Indiana and Ohio State, both 2007 NCAA Tournament participants, are chosen fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Gophers open their season Friday as they host Northern Iowa at 7:00 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The game also marks the Gophers’ Kicks for the Cure’ promotion, which supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation and their effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Minnesota opens its Big Ten schedule with a match at Michigan State on Sept. 26. The Gophers’ conference home opener is a noon match against Indiana on Oct. 5.
