The Minnesota women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 on their Italian tour defeating the All-Star Lombardy Team by a score of 101-40 in Florence on Saturday. Zoe Harper led the Golden Gophers with 22 points.
A young Lombardy squad played the first quarter like they were a bit intimidated by their American visitors as the Gophers ran out to a 28-2 lead after the first quarter. Minnesota scored the game’s first 10 points, before Lombardy got on the scoreboard with a free throw.
Three of the more entertaining plays of the game occurred in the first quarter. Midway through the stanza, Brittany McCoy snagged a steal and headed up the court. She faked a jumper then tossed a no-look pass to Emily Fox, who finished the play off with a three pointer from the left wing. With two minutes left, Harper collected a perfect lob pass from McCoy then banked home an easy lay-in. The final top play of the first quarter was also contributed by Harper, who intercepted a pass in the middle of the lane and sprinted coast-to-coast for a lay-up with the Gopher bench cheering on her efforts.
Lombardy finally scored its first basket at the 5:17 mark of the second quarter to make the score 39-6 at the time. The Gophers held a 54-13 advantage at halftime.
The third quarter was a bit sloppy, especially defensively for the Gophers. Lombardy scored 18 points, nearly half of their total points. Still, Minnesota held a comfortable 78-31 lead at the end of the period.
The Gophers tightened their defense in the fourth quarter. It took Lombardy nearly seven minutes to score in the period. Fox, who chipped in 17 points, provided the highlight play in this quarter, grabbing a steal, averting a defender with a behind-the-back dribble at halfcourt then scoring on an easy lay-up.
Minnesota scored over 100 points for the second straight game, after opening their Italy tour with a 104-31 win over Palestrina last Thursday.
Katie Ohm tallied 17 points, 15 coming in the first half. Ashley Ellis-Milan also scored 17 points, while Kay Sylva was the fifth Gopher in double figures with 10.
