Golden Gopher All-American Liz Roehrig placed eighth in the heptathlon at the 2008 Thrope Cup in Manhanttan, Kans., over the weekend. The Thorpe Cup is a multi-event competition held annually between the U.S. and Germany.

The team scores are tabulated by adding the final scores of the five heptathletes from each team. Germany won its second straight title in the women’s heptathlon with a 105-point difference, 17,267 to 17,162.

Roehrig compiled a score of 5,402, struggling in the second day of competition to fall from fourth place after four events and the first day to eighth. Lela Nelson led the U.S. and captured the individual Thorpe Cup title for the second consecutive year with a career-best score of 6,029 points. Nelson was recruited and coached by Gopher head coach Matt Bingle during his tenure at Eastern Michigan.

Roehrig ran a time of 14.45 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles before tying for the top spot in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches. She landed a throw of 41-7 1/4 in the shot put, then ended the first day of events with a time of 24.67 in the 200-meter dash. Roehrig’s fourth-place first-day total was just 51 points off Nelson’s lead.

The long jump kicked off a difficult second day for Roehrig. She landed a jump of 19-6 1/4, an average effort for the Gopher recordholder in the event. Roehrig continued to slip in the standings with a throw of just 104-6 in the javelin. She completed the competition with a time of 2:38.57 in the 800 meters.

Roehrig has one season of outdoor track eligibility remaining in the Gopher career.
