Christine Tan Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

Junior libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week according to an announcement by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 1. It marks the third time in her career, twice in 2007, that Tan has collected the weekly honors.

This past week, she helped the Golden Gophers to a 3-0 record on the way to capturing the Bluejay Invitational title. Tan averaged 6.10 dps and 0.50 aps, and was perfect in receiving serves with 42 serve receptions.

She collected 18 digs and an assists in a three-game victory over Creighton on Aug. 29. In the second match of the tournament, Tan collected a career-high 32 digs against Texas A&M. She also had 11 digs and a service ace in a three-game victory over No. 21 LSU.

Minnesota will be back in action when it travels to the Honolulu Advertiser Classic. The Golden Gophers will face No. 12 Hawai'i on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 12 a.m. (CT). Minnesota will also take on Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. (CT) and Wyoming on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. (CT). All three matches can be heard live on gophersports.com.
