Colleen Powers, who completed her Golden Gopher softball career earlier this year, has accepted a graduate assistant position at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas. Powers starts work toward a masters degree in sport exercise science with an emphasis in sport management this fall.

“I’m looking forward to going to a different region of the country and experiencing something new. Year-long softball is something that’s new to me and I’m looking forward to working with the [West Texas A&M] program,” Powers said. “During my time at Minnesota, coach [Lisa Bernstein] and coach [Julie Standering] were instrumental helping me to find a program that I wanted to get involved with and a school where I could work toward my goals.”

Powers, the Gophers’ primary right fielder for each of the past two seasons, finished her career at Minnesota this spring with a 1.000 fielding percentage. The Minnetonka, Minn. native appeared in 122 contests during her career and made 94 starts. During the 2008 season, Powers led the Gophers with 10 sacrifices and was five for five in stolen base attempts.

The Golden Gopher softball program is in the midst of its fall practice schedule and will host its annual Fall Invitational at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium Sept. 27-28.
