Lauren Gibbemeyer Named AVCA National Player of the Week

Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week for Sept. 16. Gibbemeyer becomes the second Big Ten player to claim National Player of the Week honors this year, joining Laura DeBruler (Illinois) who collected the honors on Sept. 2.

Gibbemeyer also became the sixth Golden Gophers in school history to collect the honors. She joins Becky Bauer (10/7/96), Nicole Branagh (10/11/99), Stephanie Hagen (10/2/00), Cassie Busse (10/27/03) and Kelly Bowman (10/25/04) on that list.

This week, Gibbemeyer also became the second Golden Gopher player to claim Big Ten weekly honors this year, joining Christine Tan who won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors for Sept. 1. Gibbemeyer is also the first middle blocker to claim the weekly honors since Meredith Nelson did so on Oct. 2, 2006.

Last week, Gibbemeyer averaged 3.20 kpg, 2.00 dps and 2.00 blps. She hit .450 (11-2-20) with 11 kills and eight blocks in a three-set victory over No. 4 California on Sept. 12. The next night, Gibbemeyer hit .345 (15-5-29) with 15 kills, seven blocks and five digs in a four-set victory over No. 16 Cal Poly. On Sept. 14, she tallied a career-high 12 digs in a three-set victory over Notre Dame.

Minnesota ended up going 3-0 on the week in the Diet Coke Classic, and moved up to No. 8 in the AVCA Top 25 on Sept. 15.

This season, Gibbemeyer is averaging 2.87 kps, 1.52 blps and is hitting .330. She is also averaging 1.80 kps in four matches against ranked opposition.
